Uncovering the Mystery of Videographer Pricing: Everything You Need to Know (to hire us at least)

Are you tired of video production companies leaving you in the dark about their prices? Yeah, us too. That's why we're here to shine a light on our prices and let you know what you're in for.

First, we have to address that when you ask a videographer how much it will cost to make you a video OR you google it and your shocked at the wide array of pricing, well, that’s not wrong at all. So if you are looking for an article that will give you a “one size fits all” pricing model for creating a video, we wish you luck in finding that.

I’m sure it's frustrating that so many video production websites don’t promote their pricing on their site so you don’t even know what you’re walking into. We hate it too as a video production company trying to fairly price ourselves, there’s only so many times you can go “undercover” pretending your name is Suzie who’s looking for a price on a video to promote her cupcake business before the companies catch on to what you’re doing…

So we’ve included some rough pricing that can at least let you know what logic we use to price our projects so you can sort of come up with a budget before reaching out.

So, here we go:


For the longest time, talking about pricing and trying to figure out what to charge each client was a complete nightmare and I hated the idea of having that conversation. Now, we do things a little differently.

We at Handprint Media Productions use the pricing tactic of a day rate. I don’t know many videographers that charge by the hour (there are some) and the main reason for that is because there is honestly never a video that only takes an hour to make. When you take into consideration all the pieces of the puzzle that go into making a video: planning, shooting, editing, color correcting, etc. it’s going to take a good hour+ just to plan a good video.

Okay enough talk, our day rate is $1,200. So when you reach out with your project needs we will discuss the amount of days we will need to shoot and that will factor into the cost of your project. Things that can change this cost are things like travel to different locations, different people or objects that need to be included, and scheduling conflicts.

Our day rate for editing is $800 and that difference is because we don’t have to factor in equipment costs for a day at the coffee shop editing together your project.

This is also why we as videographers can’t price your project based off how long the video will be. The length and style of video can swing dramatically based on your needs.

For example, let’s assume you wanted a video capturing a presentation at an event. Maybe that speech lasts for 45 minutes and you just want a simple intro, outro, and the speech in the middle with no special cuts or graphic overlays. Well that video is 45 minutes long but it would likely only take 1 day to shoot and 1 day to edit. Putting you around a max cost of $2,000. Now lets take the example of a 3 minute finished project and the scope looks something like traveling to each of your 5 locations scattered around the US to highlight the locations and the managers. Now we have to factor in intense planning and scripting to tell the right story, travel to 5 different locations, multiple interviews with the owners, all of our equipment, and multiple days of trimming down all that RAW footage into a beautiful masterpiece! So at least 5 days of shooting and a few days of editing. We’re looking at potentially $10,000.

  • Discovery and Planning

The first step to any video actually doesn’t even start with the video. It’s you. We like to spend a solid amount of time getting to know your business, it’s brand, and it’s voice. No one knows your business better than you, it’s your baby, and we are just here to help guide you through helping your business tell it’s story.

This process begins with a discovery meeting where we will sit down and get to know each other. We’ll ask you questions like:

Why did you decide to start this business?

What is the business’s purpose and what is your purpose?

What do you hope to accomplish with creating a video?

What will that accomplishment look like? How will it help you reach your goals?

You know, the hard questions.

**If we find that we have never thought about these questions for your business before, fear not, we actually can offer consulting to take you from no plan to THE plan for your business communications strategy.**

  • Develop a Concept and Storyboard

Once you have a clear understanding of your objectives and target audience, it's time to develop a concept for your video. This can involve brainstorming different ideas and approaches that align with your objectives and target audience. From there, you'll want to create a storyboard that outlines the visual elements and shots you want to include in your video. This will help you visualize the final product and ensure that you are staying on track with your objectives.

  • Script Writing

With a clear storyboard in hand, we’ll need to develop a script that aligns with your storyboard and effectively communicates your message. Our script should be clear, concise, and engaging, while also being aligned with your objectives and target audience. We like incorporating elements that will keep viewers interested, such as humor or emotional storytelling.

  • Location Scouting & Casting (if necessary)

Depending on the type of video and whether you are wanting to be a part of the video or hire out actors we then have to work together to decide the best locations and faces to represent your vision. This process isn’t always necessary but if it is it can add some extra time and cost to the production.


Now for the FUN part! This is also where a lot of the “cost variation” portion of pricing comes in. Most of it is pretty straight forward but there are some factors that can add to or change the price of the project.

  • Travel & Set up

We’ve already planned who or what we are shooting so now we show up on production day with alllllll the gear. Lights, camera, audio equipment, shooters, props if necessary, etc. and that all take time to set up and dial in.

  • Action

I can honestly say that I’ve never had more fun than I do working with a business to create something we are all excited about. Usually working with me at Handprint Media Productions will include plenty of emotions. Whether that be laughs all the way to tears we will have a blast creating something amazing for your business brand. We show up, we help direct, we shoot, you just be you, and we’ll handle the rest!


Welcome to the other half of the variable cost factor. This is the final piece to the puzzle and this is where the magic we captured on shoot day comes to life.

  • File Transfer

YES this is an entire category on its own. The files that we are creating with our cameras are of the highest quality and file transfers do not go quickly, file storage is also a huge part of our process with these massive files.

  • Edit

The editing process includes a few different steps that we won’t bore you with too much but the basic layout is:

  • Synchronizing audio and video files captured

  • Cutting, trimming, and creating the perfect layout according to our script

  • Color Correcting the footage. This sounds ridiculous but it's actually very critical.

  • Creating and adding relevant text and graphic overlays

  • Finding and adding the right copyright free music **We have subscriptions to the best ones out there so we have quite the library of music to choose from**

  • Formatting the video to our specific aspect ratio needs; for example, a YouTube video is going to need different aspect ratio and quality than an Instagram reel


  • Digital Files are created

I have nothing special to say here. We create the files. Pretty simple. I WILL note that it takes quite a powerful machine to render these videos though. I had to buy an *expensive* powerhouse of a computer to do this.

  • First Draft

We strive for perfection the first time we create a video but we understand that sometimes we have to make minor adjustments.

One time I had a wedding video need to be revised because I included an uncle dancing with someone he shouldn’t have been hahaha

So once you review the video let us know of any minor changes or mistakes that need to be corrected/addressed. We will dive back in and correct those for you.

  • Final Delivery

Once we have everything ironed out we finally are to the point where we can deliver your video file for you! Then you can put it where ever you need across your business platform. Whether that be social media, landing page, website, blog…you get the picture.


When you look at all of the pieces to the puzzle hopefully it makes it a little easier to understand how we work on coming up with pricing and production cost. Most projects seem to fall withing a 3-5 day to complete range and fall in a price range of $3,000 - $6,000 but of course MANY outliers exist to this typical range.
