Hiring a Videographer 101: Lighting

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

The video below will help you visually see the reason that some videographers will set up their won lighting at your reception and how much of a difference it can make. If you don't want to see it with your own eyes that's fine. Just scroll past the video and I'll type out the whole thing and you can just take my word for it.

Here's the gist:

Lighting is a key element into how camera's perceive the color that is being sent to the sensor. The different color lighting affects mainly "white balance" and that has a MAJOR effect on how your skin tone looks.

Take a look at this image:

That is a screen capture from a video where our lighting was not set up and all we had to work with was the venue and DJ's lighting. While that lighting sure does a great job of setting the mood at the location for the first dance. It doesn't do wonders for the film that is a result of that lighting. Look at the dress and skin and notice how the dress is pink instead of white and the skin doesn't really look like skin. Yes it's obviously understood that that was the color at the wedding so it's not the videographers "fault" however we can make a situation like this look much better with some good lighting.

Lets look at another example. Here is a clip that was taken again without any special lighting by the videographer. Just the venue's lack of lights and the DJ's lighting.

You can barely see the subject! Even if I flipped around to the other side, again their skin would look extremely pink and "off".

This next picture is taken at the SAME wedding, from the SAME angle, of the SAME people, but I have our lights set up.

See the difference? The skin looks better and you can still see the "vibe" of the colors behind the subjects.

This is the best that I can explain the difference that lighting brings to a reception. Now we don't need the lighting to be set up the whole time, just long enough to get some good video of people dancing and those first dances. After that we can pull down the lights so you have the mood that makes people want to dance.

Pro tip: if you the bride are dancing in the light that we set up so will your guests! They kind of want to be around you on your big day.
